Ammolite has recently been named Alberta’s official gemstone

Ammolite has recently been named Alberta’s official gemstone and it can only be found on Blackfoot traditional lands. The stone is made of the fossilized shells of ammonites - an extinct sea creature that once lived along the eastern slopes of the Rockies. Piikani Nation member Troy Knowlton owns Blackfoot Rocks and Gems, a business dedicated to ammolites.
