The blazes have burned an area almost four times the size of Prince Edward Island. No deaths have been reported.
The evacuation order issued Wednesday night applies to the city of Yellowknife and neighbouring First Nations communities of Ndilo and Dettah.
By Wednesday evening, all of Yellowknife, Ndılǫ and Dettah were told to evacuate by noon Friday.
Evacuations have been ordered for Fort Smith, Enterprise, Jean Marie River and Hay River. People displaced by the fires are relocating to temporary shelters set up as far south as Calgary.
