Jail death in Manitoba

Manitoba’s Department of Justice is also reporting the death of an inmate.

The province said in a news release that a 23-year-old man had died at the Brandon Correctional Centre on Dec. 29. Brandon is Manitoba’s second-largest city located about two hours west of Winnipeg.

The province said it would not release the man’s name due to privacy reasons.

The Brandon Police Service said in a news release it received a report of an assault at the jail around 5:30 p.m. that day.

It said the male victim was being tended to by paramedics when its officers arrived on the scene. The man was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Members of the Brandon Police Service Major Crime Section and Forensic Identification Unit are investigating, the release added.
