Annette Francis APTN NewsEleven-year-old Sladen Peltier has some pretty cool keepsakes from the film Indian Horse, based on the award-winning novel by Richard Wagamese. One includes a jacket Peltier wore, as he was in the movie.”I was young Saul in the film and I’m basically just the Saul that was taken away from his family and put in the residential school and I was in the residential school for a lot of the movie,” said Peltier. He also has a novel signed by the whole film crew. But he holds bragging rights to a nomination from the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television for best supporting actor. He just found out a few weeks ago.”It is really, really cool, because I thought that if it is anybody, it would be one of the other actors that are in the movie… I didn’t think it’d be me, and I’m the only one who got nominated,” he said. What’s more surprising is this was Peltier first time acting and he auditioned for the role after seeing posters at a Little NHL hockey tournament.”There was just this one part of the arena that had a whole bunch of posters that was like, audition for Indian Horse and stuff like that, so It got shoved in my hockey bag and then we just found it at the bottom of my hockey bag at my house and then ya we got to audition for it,” he said. His mother, Katelin Gillis, said it’s been a whirlwind year.”This whole process has be surreal, that’s the only way I can explain it,” said Gillis. “From the moment we got the call, like I got the call that he got the part, to through this whole process. So when I received the call that he was nominated, I literally was speechless.”The Canadian Screen Awards will be held in Toronto Mar. 11, just before Indian Horse hits theatres in April. As for his acting career, Peltier said it’s something he wants to continue. But right now he’s just enjoying being a kid.afrancis.ca

Congrats Shaden for getting the part and being nominated in the film. Courage determination and ambition and your gut instinct and your passion to follow your dreams you never know when something great is going to happen until you try and do it.
