We Wai Kum First Nation is celebrating the return of land from the British Columbia government.
The two parties reached agreement to see the transfer of nearly 2,300 hectares after 25 years of treaty negotiations.
The parcel is located near Campbell River on Vancouver Island.
“This is the first time we have had a significant agreement along the way of that treaty negotiation process,” said Chief Chris Roberts.
“It’s pretty significant to my nation, as it’s a sizeable chunk of land back into our title ownership for us to be able to utilize as we see fit.”
Roberts said the Crown land was used to supply timber for sale. He said We Wai Kum will continue operating it as forest lands for the nation’s benefit.
The land transfer is being viewed as a major step forward in reconciliation with the province.
