A gathering to elect a new president of the Métis National Council (MNC) has been postponed.
The election was set to take place in Saskatoon on Sept. 26.
The postponement comes on the heels of a resolution that was passed by the Métis Nation-Saskatchewan (MN-S) calling for the Métis Nation of Ontario (MNO) to be removed from the organization immediately.
MNC President Cassidy Caron, the first women elected to hold the office, announced in May that she would not be seeking re-election.
At the time, Caron said she was early in her pregnancy but wanted to make the announcement to ensure an orderly transition at MNC.
A spokesperson for MNC confirms the annual general assembly and election to replace Caron has been postponed and a new date will be determined by the board of governors, which is comprised of the presidents of the four governing members and president of the MNC.
One of the members of the board of governors, MN-S President Glen McCallum, recently brought forward a resolution to the MN-S provincial council that calls for the immediate removal of the MNO over ongoing concerns with the MNO’s membership registry.
The resolution also calls for the removal of the office of the MNC president which would be replaced with a chairperson to preside over the MNC board of governors.
The resolution, passed by the MN-S provincial council, says MN-S will resign from the MNC if the resolution is not passed by the Métis Nation General Assembly.
Three years ago, the Manitoba Métis Federation withdrew from the MNC.
Representatives from the MNC and MN-S were unavailable for comment on Friday.
