The opening day of the Assembly of First Nations special assembly kicked off Tuesday in Winnipeg.
Over the next three days chiefs from across the country will meet and elect a new leader.
The AFN says 639 chiefs are eligible to vote.
Three hundred had registered by Tuesday morning.
