Trudeau’s snap election means voters go to polls in 36 days

Voters will head to the polls on Sept. 20 after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called an early federal election.

Trudeau could have waited until mid-2023, according to Canada’s election law.

But on Sunday the writs were dropped in the race to secure a majority government after the Liberals won a minority in 2019 in what would be their third consecutive term.

Reaction was mixed on the streets of Winnipeg.
