Ontario’s Special Investigation Unit, or SIU, is appealing to members of the public who witnessed the shooting death of Jason West, 57, by Windsor police.
“After a review of surveillance footage, investigators are seeking to identify the occupant(s) of a grey sedan as they are believed to have witnessed the police interaction and the events leading up to it,” said a release from the SIU Friday.
According to the SIU, police responded to a report of a person in possession of a weapon on Sept. 6. After interacting with police, West was shot and killed, the release said.
“The vehicle, a grey Ford Fusion with chrome trim, was parked at the Food Basics at 880 Goyeau Street on September 6, 2024, at about 10:30 a.m.,” according to the SIU.
West is one of seven First Nations people – six males and one female – who have been killed by city police or the RCMP across the country since Aug. 29.
All deaths are being investigated by each province’s police investigation service.
