Police say two sisters from Lake St. Martin First Nation in Manitoba have been identified as victims of a shooting that claimed the lives of four people on Sunday.
According to police, Crystal Beardy, 34, and her sister, Stephanie Beardy, 33, were killed along with Melelek Lesikel, 29, and Dylan Lavallee, 41.
“Lake St. Martin has lost two of their members of their community. They are mourning the loss of sisters,” said Winnipeg police Insp. Jennifer McKinnon at a news conference on Monday.
Police said no one is in custody and won’t say if more than one shooter was involved.
“We will do everything that we can to discover why this happened and who was involved,” said police chief Danny Smyth. “This is an extremely troubling event and it certainly has shocked the community.”
Police said the shooting happened early Sunday morning. Officers responded to a shooting in a multi-story unit and discovered five people with gunshot wounds.
Crystal Beardy and another man were pronounced dead at the scene police said. Her sister Stephanie died in hospital.
Three more victims were brought to the hospital in critical condition where two of them died.
There have been nearly 40 homicides in Winnipeg so far in 2023.
A fifth victim remains in critical condition.
