Saskatchewan Senator Lillian Dyck hosted the screening of a short documentary on Parliament Hill Tuesday.
It’s called, Reserve 107.
It’s about the dispossession of the young Chipewyan Band from their land in Laird, Saskatchewan, 70 kilometres north of Saskatoon.
They lost the land in 1897.
Despite the passage of time, the band never forgot about losing their land.
Instead of the loss leading to violence, the band invited the settlers to sit down for a meal.
And instead of anger, an agreement to work together was struck.
“Something remarkable and something that should be done right across Canada,” said Gary Laplant, a Chipewyan descendent. “The settlers felt a social responsibility.”
