Romeo Saganash surprised many by suddenly withdrawing from the NDP leadership race last week.
Saganash, a Cree MP from Quebec, met with supporters in his home riding on Friday.
He thanked people for their support and said that the time and financial demands of the race was putting on his family were too great.
“To lead a credible campaign, for any leadership bid, you need to back that up with money,” said Saganash. “And I received a lot of support throughout the country, grassroots people, but the money didn’t follow.”
Saganash, however, bristled at the suggestion his campaign employed the wrong strategy.
“No, no, you haven’t been following me for the last four months. If you had, you would understand that I did a lot of work, a lot of work,” said Saganash. “The perception is one thing, the real work that we did on the ground is another.”
