RCMP in Yellowknife have released the name of a woman who was shot and killed after a 5-hour standoff with RCMP officers last week.
42-year-old Karen Lander, originally of Kugluktuk in Nunavut, was reported to be suicidal and barricaded in her house. A crisis negotiator made contact with Lander and spoke with her for several hours. At about 6 PM local time, Lander emerged from the house with a long-barreled firearm and pointed it at police. RCMP say they repeatedly told Lander to put down the firearm, and when she refused, shots were fired. Lander was taken to the hospital shortly afterwards and pronounced dead on arrival.
An external police investigation into the shooting is ongoing.
