Recent court decisions could have a dramatic impact on the money the federal government owes Canada’s Indigenous peoples.
Specifically, the recent Huu-ay-aht ruling in B.C. may be a game changer for future specific claims.
APTN Investigates video journalist Josh Grummett went behind the scenes to examine why a tribunal judge swept aside Ottawa’s cookie-cutter approach and what it means now that those compensation formulas have been ruled inadequate.
I am huu-ay-aht first nation. I am super happy about this! Now I can fix my grandmother’s house I’m living in! It is one of the first houses built on this reserve. And because my grandmother’s not living in it (she has to live in town to be closer to doctors)…it doesn’t qualify to be fixed. this house was built in 1964. there has been a few updates but due to it being empty for 3 years a few things need to be done (I. E: the ceiling tiles are starting to droop…the patio on the side of the house is rotting…carpets ripped out and new flooring.) This money will help out alot and from other family members will go to good use not just misused like people may think. My sisters are going to get their cars fixed…and other things they need. This is a godsent and perfect timing.
so if you didnt get money to repair the house you would continue to live in it? have you considered fixing it with your own money, thats what i would have to do. oh yeah plus id need to earn the money to buy it and pay utilities and land taxes. whats your overhead?
