February is Inuit Language Month which is a big deal in Nunavut where around 76 per cent of the population can hold a conversation in Inuktitut.
To keep the language alive, Nunavut schools need Inuktitut books and authors.
That’s where Nadia Sammurtok comes in.
She began writing books for children while attending the Nunavut Teacher’s Education program.
Now she writes in English and the books are published in English and Inuktitut.
