The woman in charge of Nunavut’s largest land claims organization wants Inuktut recognized by Canada as one of the country’s founding languages.
Inuktut is the catch-all term for all Inuit language.
Aluki Koterik, president of Nunavut Tunngavik Inc., recently spoke at a United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues about her language and the need to have it officially recognized by the federal government.
Recognition of Inuktut as a founding language would put it on par with English and French in Nunavut.
At the moment, the federal government funds French language education at a rate of $8189.00 per student annually while Inuktut receives just $187.
We Inuit pay taxes too and it is our right too. Most of us speak two languages. Do you?

What other group is in the background looking for more of the taxpayers hard earned cash?
I think we should cut all this stuff off now.
Everyone is equally Canadian.

What a waste. More money for over funding of useless taxpayer money
This is a slippery slope
I support it all the the way life of canada life of Europe those and native languages all the way amen strongly believe in a many cultural language’s amen go for it
Looks to me like they just want the funding. Why do they not get it. We waste billions giving to other countries. Time to look after our own first.
What’s next? Seperatism?
Indigenous languages across the country do not require “special recognition” to be catergorized the same as English or French, they are both foreign to this “country”. The Inuktuk language also does not hold dominancy over other indigenous languages for it to be independantly “special”.
To financially support indigenous languages would be more appropriate under the reconciliation initiative where fundings would be disseminated on the basis of equality for all.
Separatism? You are a troglodite. Their culture should be preserved, ancient languages are lost all of the time and their culture is important to them. They should get the funds in order to reign sovereign.
