Six Nations police raided a marijuana dispensary earlier this month arresting the owner and a few others.
It’s what the band council appears to want and so does the chief of police.
“They should wait until they are dealing with a legal commodity,” said Glen Vickers, chief of Six Nations police, a First Nation south of Toronto.
“We all know in a few months it’s going to be legal, but right now it’s not.”
The federal government is set to legalize marijuana as of July 1.
The owner of Green Health for 6 believes council and police are being too strict on something that is happening on many nations across the country.
“In other territories their band councils are embracing it and more or less saying it’s a grey area that they are not going to touch,” said Jeff Henhawk. “I think that our band council should at least work with us or put out a mandate.”
The reserve has drug problem and the manager of the shop said the weed offers an alternative to hard drugs.
“We are trying to offer a medicinal plant-based medicine here to counter and fight the opiate addiction,” said Aaron Sault. “The number of narcotics that are in our community here on Six Nations is ridiculous.”
Council declined to be interviewed but sent a statement to APTN News.
“Until federal legislative amendments have been enacted to legalize and regulate the use and sale of cannabis, Six Nations Elected Council remains of the position that cannabis is a controlled substance,” the statement said.
“As such, and in the absence of applicable Six Nations laws and regulations, the Elected Council considers cannabis subject to the Controlled Drug and Substances Act.”
They shut down marijuana dispensaries but refuse to do anything about actual hard drugs that are completely illegal and not going to be legalized anytime in the near future and are causing complete havoc on our community. Instead they place signs up around the community in regards to drug dealers and drugs but yet nothing is done to actually get rid of them or even attempt to get rid of them. This is all a big bullshit publicity stunt. Instead of going after marijuana dispensaries I say you actually make a move on the drug dealers that are flooding our community with hard shit and killing our people!
I think the owners of the shop are totally right giving a healthy lifestyle alternative to the drug epidemic that’s all too present in different community’s not just on the reserve but even in city limits to and giving a way to bring an alternative for people who are struggling with health issues like pain, anxiety, and even addiction itself MMJ gives those who are using opiates and other illegal forms of self medicating for something that MMJ could help with I think it’s totally wrong for the dispensery to be shut down there is other ways to get marijuana for the FN people but having a open dispensery gives a way for them to get a prescription and to know the product they receive isn’t cut or have issues starting from doing shady back door deals this would have gave a way to properly medicate with a product they can trust plus bring revinew to the FN people.
Long story short it doesn’t make sense to close down something that was helping bring down illegal trade and help with the FN’s themselves from jobs to bringing help to the addiction issues and I think if there is a way to help these issues and it gets shut down there is a problem from within the upper level ranking people that should rethink the safety and health security of their people and reopen with stipulations that makes a safe and secure environment for the health of their people.

Six “Nations” police enforce crown law, but disregard FN’s rights/sovereignty. The band wont stand with the medicine providers to assert jurisdictional authority.
