Iqaluit residents crowded around the RCMP detachment in Nunavut’s capital for the unveiling of a monument marking the contribution of Inuit special constables and their dogs.
The special constables were the Inuit RCMP members who made sure that the southern officers could get around – and even survive.
The monument was the recommendation of the Qikiqtani Truth Commission. The commissioner studied the historical conditions on Baffin Island from the ‘50s to the ‘70s.
