The suspicious death of a young child on Bloodvein First Nation last week is being treated as a homicide, RCMP say.

In a news release, Bloodvein RCMP say a female under the age of three was taken to the community’s nursing station on the evening of Jan. 24 with serious injuries. When officers arrived they learned the victim had died.

Bloodvein is located 285 kilometres north of Winnipeg.

The following day, RCMP say they had a warrant to search the home where the child was living.

In the meantime, the release said an autopsy confirmed the victim died from injuries as a result of a homicide.

On Jan. 29, RCMP arrested Burma Skye of Bloodvein and charged her with second-degree murder. They say she was remanded into custody.

RCMP noted Skye, 56, was the primary caregiver of the victim.

“The homicide of a two-year-old girl is not just a loss for her family but a profound loss to the community,” said lead investigator Sgt. Laura LeDrew in the release.

“This is a senseless crime that will have a profound impact on the community, first responders and investigating officers. Our number one priority right now is seeking justice for the victim.”

RCMP say their investigation continues.
