HALIFAX–The man and woman charged in the murder of Loretta Saunders shared an apartment with their alleged victim, Halifax police said Thursday.
Police believe Saunders, a 26 year-old Inuk from Labrador, was killed in the apartment on Feb. 13 which she shared for part of the month with her alleged killers.
The pair was apparently subletting the apartment and Saunders was believed to have been visiting the apartment to collect rent the day she was killed.
Victoria Henneberry, 28, and Blake Leggette, 25, were each charged with first degree murder Thursday. They are scheduled to appear in court to face the charges Friday.
Henneberry and Leggette are lovers and Saunders’ murder was planned, said Halifax police Supt. Jim Perrin.
Police said Saunders’ body was moved from the apartment. Her body was found in the median of the Trans-Canada highway near Salisbury, NB., on Wednesday.
Henneberry and Leggette were initially charged with stealing Saunders’ car which was found on Feb. 18 in Harrow, Ont.
A St. Mary’s University student, Saunders was preparing to write a thesis on missing and murdered Indigenous women.
An autopsy has yet to be conducted on Saunders’ body. Perrin would not confirm whether Saunders was pregnant at the time of her death.
why would killers steal the car and continue to drive it, that dont make any sense to me!
What a terrible tragedy – my heart goes out to her family and friends. I hope those who are guilty are brought to justice.
