The past election saw a record number of indigenous MP’s heading to the house of commons. Those MPS represent ridings in British Columbia, Nunavut, Northwest Territories, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario and Newfoundland and Labrador.
Now that parliament is back in full swing, there’s a lot of work to be done, in the House of Commons and through parliamentary committees.
Here is where you’ll find your MP during business hours.
British Columbia:
Minister of Justice and Attorney General Jody Wilson-Raybould (Vancouver Granville) sits on a number of cabinet committees.
According to the Parliamentary website, she participates in the following committees: Agenda and Results, Canada in the World and Public Security, Sub-Committee on Canada-United States Relations, Diversity and Inclusion, Intelligence and Emergency Management and Open and Transparent government.
Manitoba:
Metis MP Dan Vandal (Saint Boniface) takes a seat on the Standing Committee on Official Languages and the Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage.
Cree MP, Robert-Falcon Ouellette, (Winnipeg Centre), will sit on the Standing Committee on Finance.
Newfoundland and Labrador
Yvonne Jones is the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Indigenous Affars, Carolyn Bennett. She also serves on the following committees: Canada-China Legislative Association, Canada-Europe , Parliamentary Association, Canada-Germany Interparliamentary Group, Canada-Ireland Interparliamentary Group, Canada-Israel Interparliamentary Group, Canada-Italy Interparliamentary Group, Canada-United Kingdom Inter-Parliamentary Association, Canada-United States Inter-Parliamentary Group, Canadian Branch of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA), Canadian Delegation to the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe Parliamentary Assembly (OSCE PA), Canadian NATO Parliamentary Association (NATO PA)
Northwest Territories
Metis MP Michael McLeod (Northwest Territories) takes on, the Standing Committee on Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development, and the Standing Committee on Natural Resources.
Nunavut:
Jordan Tootoo, minister of Fisheries and Oceans and the Coast Guard sits on Environment, Climate Change and Energy and Parliamentary Affairs.
Ontario:
Don Rusnak (Thunder Bay-Rainy River) an Anishinaabe will take on few new roles. He is a member of the the Standing Committee on Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development and the Standing Joint Committee on Library of Parliament.
Metis MP Vance Badawey (Niagara Centre), will have a busy session while sitting on four committees. They are, the Sub Committee on Agenda and Procedure of the Standing Committee on Transport, Standing Committee on Transport, the Standing Joint Committee for the Scrutiny of Regulations, and the Standing Committee on Transport, Infrastructure and Communities.
Quebec:
Romeo Saganash (Abitibi—Baie-James—Nunavik—Eeyou) is a spare member for Aboriginal Affairs.
Saskatchewan:
Georgina Jolibois (Desnethé—Missinippi—Churchill River) is a spare member for Aboriginal Affairs.
