Murray Sinclair, a former judge, senator and chair of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, or TRC, has died. He was 73.

Sinclair was a member of Peguis First Nation and a father of five.

According to his son Niigaan, a sacred fire will be lit on the grounds of the Manitoba legislature.

Sinclair had a long career in public service that started with his appointment to the bench as the first Indigenous judge in Manitoba.

He went on to chair the TRC, a look at Canada’s residential school system that heard from survivors from across the country. The ground breaking report issued 94 calls to action for Canadians to reckon with its past.

Sinclair was appointed to the senate in 2016 by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. He serviced until 2021 when he went back into private practice.

According to his family, Murray had been sick for some time.

More to come.
