Ten years ago Mark Lange was convicted of second-degree murder.
“I was caught up in alcohol, drug addictions…just didn’t know who I was,” said Lange.
He spent eight years in prison and during that time reflected on how he got there.
He needed to connect to his culture. He needed Elders. The ceremonies.
It’s something Canada’s federal prisons lack and need more of to counteract the increasing number of Aboriginal people being put behind bars.
APTN National News reporter Shaneen Robinson has the story.

His culture, elders and ceremonies were all there before he chose to murder. Why should these privileges be provided when they clearly did not impact his decision to commit the crime?
