Federal NDP devote QP time to grill government on reconciliation

With the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, also known as Orange Shirt Day, around the corner, the federal NDP used its time to grill the government on reconciliation – starting with the nine First Nations people killed after interacting with police.

“Studies won’t save lives. We need action now. Like an Indigenous-led crisis response team,” said NDP MP Lori Idlout (Nunavut). “The Liberals need to stop delaying. Why does this government refuse to act to save Indigenous’ peoples’ lives.”

Leah Gazan (Winnipeg Centre) called on the Liberals to support her private members bill which would make residential school denialism a crime.

“Willfully promoting hatred against Indigenous people through residential school denialism has no place in Canada,” she said. “So will the Liberal government support my bill to end this hate and protect the stories of survivors.”

In recognition of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, Parliament isn’t scheduled to sit on Sept. 30.
