Kyra Wilson, the former chief of Long Plain First Nation has claimed the spot that became vacant after the sudden passing of grand chief Cathy Merrick last year.
Betsy Kennedy had been serving in the interim.
Three other candidates were in the running against Wilson: Glenn Hudson, Leroy Constant and Bava Dhillon.
Wilson was a key figure in the fight to have a Winnipeg landfill searched for the remains of two murdered First Nations women.
Morgan Harris, 39, and Marcedes Myran, 26, were members of Long Plain First Nation.
More to come.
