A Cree lawyer from Waswanipi has been tasked with helping Montreal reconcile with Indigenous people.
Marie-Ève Bordeleau has been named the Commissioner of Indigenous Affairs, the first in the city’s history.
“I can see two very important tasks. The first one I will be working with the mayor. I will be guiding her with any questions that come that can affect the Indigenous peoples,” said Bordeleau.
“The second very important mandate that I do have is to draft, to develop a reconciliation strategy.”
Mayor Valérie Plante said the new position will help her administration build bridges with Indigenous people in the city.
“When we talk about reconciliation to me it is about acknowledging, celebrating,” said Plante.
But also feeling comfortable in the city, said Plante.
“That goes to housing, how do you find a job, how your culture is being celebrated and recognized. This is all part of that and it is why Ms. Bordeleau will be supporting me,” said Plante.
