The grand chief of the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs collapsed Friday while addressing reporters outside the Winnipeg courthouse.
Bystanders immediately started CPR and Cathy Merrick was rushed to St. Boniface Hospital.
Merrick was answering questions about the not-guilty verdict in the case of Robert Morden, a jail guard accused of criminal negligence in the 2021 death of Sagkeeng First Nation man William Ahmo.
Merrick is Cree from Cross Lake First Nation where she started her political career as chief.
She was elected as the first female grand chief of AMC, which represents 63 First Nations in Manitoba, in 2022. She was re-elected to a second term last month.
This is a developing story that will be updated as new information comes in.
