A well known hotel that offered rooms to some of Vancouver’s poorest residents on Vancouver’s infamous Downtown Eastside is now being condemned.
Now tenants are scrambling to find new accommodations ahead of the deadline.
Disgusting. There should be criminal charges for this degree of human rights violations against tenants. The Sahotas are scum, and they should pay in more than just money. They should also be legally ordered out of the landlord business, if at all possible, as they have demonstrated time and again that they are resistant to upholding their duties under the law.
The City of Vancouver also has a duty to get on with creating enough affordable housing. Even micro-units like what are found in densely populated European cities, if they are clean, spartan, with an efficient layout, would be beneficial for single professionals trying to save their pennies for a better abode, and also good for those on fixed incomes who would be content enough with a clean, renovated space of their own, with a lockable door and the basic amenities. It shouldn’t fall on surrounding municipalities to shoulder the burden of supporting Vancouver’s people on assistance and Vancouver’s low wage earners (serving the rich snobs their coffee, etc), so that Vancouver can have it’s middle to upper class utopia, free from “unsightly” Poors living there, even if they come to the city to work and wait on the wealthier set.

Update from City of Vancouver on evacuation of Balmoral Hotel
The City of Vancouver and BC Housing have assisted with securing new homes for everyone at the Balmoral Hotel who wanted support in finding alternative housing. As of this evening, over 150 people have been housed, concluding the relocation process for everyone living at the Balmoral.
The Fire Chief and Chief Building Official for the City will be posting orders this evening confirming the building as unsafe to occupy and restricting access to only allow authorized personnel.
