The national chief of the Assembly of First Nations had some strong words for the tribunal panel in Ottawa Monday hearing about alleged discrimination by the federal government on First Nation children.
Shawn Atleo compared the current state of the First Nation child welfare agencies to Indian Residential Schools.
Atleo said while the method is different the consequences are the same.
He joined APTN National News in Ottawa.
The governments system today is just as comparable to the residential school system which is ironic to the apology made by Harper and shows that he does not speak honestly and is not showing reconcilliation at all with the treatment of the children many of whom come from intergenerational families of residential school system. The many deaths today in the system is many and the abuses are many too which is justified by the government that the child end up in the system due to poverty but that is not right with the 2% cap that has been on the childs funding for school denying the child and families many services offered to Canadians but not to the first nation child which goes against human rights. Many racists end up as foster parents which is why the first nations child ends up in tragic endings many times which can be seen by the many stereotypical, racists comments made on the internet and news
Maybe if they addressed the actual reasons why so many children are taken away , the way they are forced to live and the healing that needs to be done. Support the families in a better way
we all know it and see it, the gov’t treats first nations badly, they didnt hold their part of the deal when the treaties were signed, they keep us oppressed, a consipracy
