Canadian artist, broadcaster and APTN veteran Rita Deverell has another prestigious award to her name.
Deverell, APTN’s second-ever Director of News and Current Affairs, has been named the 2018 ACTRA National Woman of the Year, an honour bestowed by a major Canadian professional performing organization.
Fittingly, Deverell received the honour on International Women’s Day Thursday.
“It is a totally energizing surprise to have this wonderful honour from my fellow Canadian media artists drop out of the sky,” said Deverell, who has received a number of awards throughout her career, including two Geminis. She was named to the Order of Canada for her work in broadcasting, including founding Vision TV, in 2005.
Under Deverell’s leadership, APTN grew from a twice weekly newscast to a daily half-hour newscast in 2002.
ACTRA – the Alliance of Canadian Cinema, Television and Radio Artists – represents more than 23,000 professional performers across the country.
