Breanna Menacho, the 22 year old who was found dead in an apartment in Yellowknife is being remembered by her family as a kind soul with a big heart.
Her mother confirmed her death on a public Facebook post Friday morning, saying that an autopsy was taking place in Edmonton.
The RCMP have charged Devon Larabie, 27, of Yellowknife with murder.
“It’s never easy to announce that a missing person’s investigation has become a sudden death investigation, we are very, very sorry for her family and her friends,” said Insp. Alex Laporte, Yellowknife RCMP detachment commander during a press conference on Friday.
Menacho was reported missing on Wednesday May 6.
She was last seen on Tuesday May 5 – a date shared with National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls.
Police and volunteer searched for her immediately.
“We continue to liaise with the family and I want to acknowledge their desire to grieve in private,” Laporte said, adding that Larabie had been remanded in custody with an upcoming court appearance scheduled for May 12.
Laporte would not comment on whether Larabie was known to Menacho.
