Face to Face
At the AFN’s Energy Forum in Vancouver in February, I had the chance to speak to AFN National Chief Perry Bellegarde about pipelines and how First Nations can benefit from resource development. We also discuss the recent conflicts within the AFN and how the National Chief hopes to keep the organization unified as some communities call for an end to pipeline and oil development, while others are hoping to improve their communities through the same industry. The National Chief explains, on this Face to Face, that the Assembly of First Nations is a very big tent that every First Nation community can fit under.

Without consent. Think about that because that is how these pipelines have been approved. No royalties, no dialogue with the community and no regard to Treaties. I witnessed it at the Line 9 NEB. Think of Aamjiwnaang and For Chip and the cancers it creates at the refineries without their consent. Do we have any moral or ethical right to decide on acts that govern their air and water supply? Then look long term. What world will we leave our kids?
I take issue to guys with “tents” who are think it is reasonable to throw a large phallus like pipe into mother earth without consent. One would be foolish to think there would not be a great price to pay for such disgraces. The jet steams of the world changes with the rising of the heat from tar sands. Black pools and deforestation radiate heat high north that curves further south in a man made arc that creates havoc for avation. We have changes in the movement and death of fish and whales by algae. We have the melting polar ice that leads to rising waters around the equator due to earths’s pull. This is not a lie. You are looking at the beginning of what is coming. It takes 30-50 years for today’s particulate emissions to manifest into climate change fully. Our kids inherit the manifestations of our actions today. Is that the legacy you wish to leave?
