A professor at Dalhousie University attempted to set the record straight on Canada’s shiny international human rights reputation Tuesday at the hearings for the National Inquiry for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls.

“People sort of think that Canada is this bastion of human rights and we have such a wonderful international reputation but there are human rights violations going on in Indigenous communities going on every day” professor and lawyer Naiomi Metallic told the commissioners.

Over 30 Indigenous lobby groups and government bodies are in Quebec City to listen and ask questions of experts and knowledge keepers who will testify.

  1. Kelvin Roy says:

    Yes, why are we not talking about Aboriginal human rights violations taking place every day right across Canada?

    As important, why are we not talking about the “rampant (leadership) corruption” taking place every day right accross Canada within Aboriginal Communities or Nations?

    Examples:
    The Metis Nation of Saskatchewan;
    The Metis Nation of Canada.

  2. Yes this is so true. People think Canada is such an innocent place to live. There is still racism here against our people. I am First Nations Algonquin. Trudeau boasts about human rights but does not say what his government is still to us today. Assimilation and genocide. This must stop. Our Creator is watching all of this.

  5. Yes, there are human rights violations on-reserve. I experienced it, and when I tried to report it, I had a difficult time with the Human Rights help line, and the Provincial Human Services. I never felt so helpless in my life, no one would assist me. I never had the opportunity to see or talk to anyone, because my health was quite bad.
