Arctic Winter Games kick off in Hay River

Athletes from across the circumpolar world are testing their skill.

There was standing room only when 1,900 youth, more than double Hay River’s population, filed in for opening ceremonies of the 2018 Arctic Winter Games over the weekend.

Athletes from across the circumpolar world are testing their skills in the games being held in the South Slave area of the Northwest Territories.

The weeklong event is the biggest of its kind there and it’s the first time the torch has returned in nearly five decades.

Youth between 15 and 18-years-old from nine countries will participate in traditional and western games such as Dene hand games, hockey and dog sledding.

APTN will have daily coverage of the games.
