The Tsilhqot’in nation has launched a lawsuit against the British Columbia government and mining firm Taseko in the wake of the recent decision by federal government to approve a second environmental assessment review for the prosperity mine project.
The court case is aimed at stopping the company from doing work at the site.
The petition alleges that the Crown failed to consult the Tsilhqot’in before permits were granted.
Jay Nelson, the lawyer representing the Tsilhqot’in, says they are still awaiting a rationale for the decision.
He said the permits present a major disruption to the Tsilhqot’in cultural way of life.
The case is expected to be heard in B.C. Supreme Court later this week.
