Mi’kmaq say the media storm around the “Proud Boys” is a chance for education.
Five members of the right wing group interrupted an Indigenous ceremony on Canada Day.
The story has gone around the world.
Many want less focus on the right wing group, and more on the Mi’kmaq and their history.
“It would be nice if the coverage wasn’t so focussed on this group of proud boys and more on the fact that you had an Indigenous woman who was in a mourning ceremony,” said Mi’kmaw Poet Laureate Rebecca Thomas. “And why was she in mourning? And why was Canada Day affecting us.”

I applaud the broad mindedness of this gracious response, but I would caution that the sort of stupidity and cowardice exemplified by these Proud Boys is not simply about ignorance, but about wilful and enduring stupidity as well. You can lead a man to knowledge but you can’t make him think.
