LA LOCHE, Sask. _ A Saskatchewan First Nation and band administrator have been fined more than $130,000 for failing to comply with an environmental protection order.
Environment Canada says the Clearwater River Dene Nation, the Clearwater Store, and band administrator, Walter Hainault, pleaded guilty to failing to comply with an environmental protection compliance order regarding regulations about storage tanks for petroleum products.
The Clearwater River Dene Nation was fined $100,000; Clearwater Store $25,000; and Hainault was fined $5,000.
The fines will be directed to the Environmental Damages Fund.
The federal department says charges were laid after the parties failed to heed the order to comply with the regulations for storing petroleum products.
Environment Canada says the regulations are in place to reduce the risk of contaminating soil and groundwater due to spills and leaks of petroleum products from storage tank systems.
