aptn InFocus with Cheryl McKenzie:
Inuk author, Mini Aodla Freeman was born in 1936 on Cape Hope Island in James Bay.
When she was still a teenager, Mini moved to Fort George, Quebec in the 1950’s to train as a nurse.
By 1957 she was working in Ottawa as an Inuktitut translator for what is now the Department of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada.
In a remarkable story, her original published memoire (1978) actually silenced her voice which documented her experience of relocation and assimilation.
But now her story has been given new life in a reworked edition, Life Among the Qallunaat.
Watch as we put Mini’s story InFocus.
