The Canadian Association of Journalists has named two APTN journalists among the list of finalists for the organization’s 2014 investigative journalism awards.
APTN Investigates journalist Kathleen Martens and APTN National News journalist Trina Roache each received a nomination. The winners for the CAJ awards will be announced in Halifax on June 6.
Martens, who is based out of APTN’s headquarters in Winnipeg, was nominated in the Open Broadcast category for her APTN Investigates story, Wasting Away. The story captured the crisis of food insecurity in Nunavut through images of elders scavenging for food at the Rankin Inlet dump.
Wasting Away is up against stories from Shaw Media, CBC Saskatchewan, CTV’s W5 and Global’s 16X9.
Roache, who is APTN National News’ Halifax reporter, was nominated in the Journalists for Human Rights-CAJ Human Rights Reporting category for her Outside the Circle series. The series focused on Jordan’s Principle which was the basis of a motion passed in the House of Commons aiming to ensure the needs of children requiring special medical attention on reserve do not get lost in jurisdictional squabbles between Ottawa and the provinces.
Outside the Circle is up against stories from the Winnipeg Free Press and Global News and two from the Toronto Star,.
Roache is also scheduled to appear on a CAJ conference panel on television newsgathering in the digital age.
