Original Treaty 1 document on display at human rights museum

The purpose of the Canadian Museum for Human Rights is to educate people from all walks of life.

Now, the museum is showcasing a temporary and rare exhibit.

It’s the original Treaty 1 agreement, which is about 143-years-old

“We wouldn’t be here in Winnipeg today if it wasn’t for Treaty 1 and we all have rights and obligations stemming from Treaty 1,” said Jamie Wilson, treaty commissioner for the Treaty Relations of Manitoba. “Even if you own property in Winnipeg, as an example, you’re exercising a right that was negotiated through Treaty 1. You have treaty rights because of Treaty 1, whether you’re First Nations or not First Nations.”
