Celebrating indigenous arts this weekend in Ottawa

OTTAWA–If you’re in Ottawa, there’s still time to check out the 3rd annual Asinabka Film & Media Arts Festival. The celebration of indigenous arts runs until Sunday, with dozens of film screenings, artists talks and a live music event.

OTTAWA–If you’re in Ottawa, there’s still time to check out the 3rd annual Asinabka Film & Media Arts Festival. The celebration of indigenous arts runs until Sunday, with dozens of film screenings, artists talks and a live music event.
On Friday night, film screenings begin at 7 PM at the Canadian Museum of History. Indigenous filmmakers and documentarians showcase works about a wide-range of experiences, including residential schools, childbirth, family and connections to the land (to name just a few!).
Also on Friday, check out the music of artists from Peterborough, Ontario at Ottawa’s Club Saw. Beginning at 10:30 PM Sean Conway, Tara Williamson and Sara Decarlo will all be performing.
Then on Saturday, festival-goers can travel the indigenous world through feature-length and short works by artists from the USA, South & Central America, New Zealand and Australia and even Europe. For night owls, there’s even a midnight screening of short films.
The festival wraps on Sunday evening at 8:45 PM with an outdoor screening on Victoria Island. “Drunktown’s Finest” is the closing night film, a critically acclaimed look at the lives of three contemporary Native Americans.
