NIBINAMIK FIRST NATION, Ont.–A small northern Ontario First Nation community is reeling after the death of two young children in a house fire.
The Jan. 13 fire, which killed two boys aged three and two, is under investigation, but foul play is not suspected at this time, said Nishnawbe-Aski Police in a statement.
A third child, a girl aged six months, survived with injuries and is currently in critical but stable condition at the Children’s Hospital in London, Ont. The infant girl escaped without burns but is experiencing respiratory complications, police said.
The bodies of the two boys were taken to Toronto for post-mortem examination.
The cause of the fire has still not been determined.
Both parents survived without major injuries, police said.
Nibinamik First Nations is about 500 kilometres northwest of Thunder Bay, Ont.
