The federal government says it needs to review a new report that says it needs to build better with relationships with Aboriginal communities over energy projects in Alberta and British Columbia.
Canada appointed Douglas Eyford to look into the relationship and write a report about eight months ago.
Eyford released his findings Thursday in Ottawa and said it’s never too late to engage First Nations.
Natural Resource Minister Joe Oliver said his office will review the report’s recommendations.
“Our government will thoroughly review the recommendations before making any decisions on next steps,” said Oliver in a statement.
Oliver said the report provides a “solid basis” for engagement on “responsible resource development” in British Columbia and Alberta.
Eyford found Aboriginal communities can benefit from energy projects, particularly employment but many First Nations oppose ripping resources from the land.
Aboriginal communities stand in the way of many large scale projects the Harper government would like to get done, for example the Northern Gateway pipeline.
