OTTAWA–James Anaya, the UN special rapporteur on the rights of Indigenous peoples, will now visit Canada from Oct. 7 to 15.
In a statement sent to some First Nations organizations, Anaya’s office said the dates were changed at Ottawa’s request.
“The government of Canada informed the special rapporteur that it was changing the dates to accommodate the session of Parliament,” said the statement. “In order to avoid further delays or cancellation of the visit, the special rapporteur agreed to the new dates.”
Foreign Affairs did not return phoned and emailed requests for comment on the changed dates.
Parliament is set to resume Oct. 16 with a speech from the throne.
Gov. Gen. David Johnston, at the request of Prime Minister Stephen Harper, officially prorogued Parliament on Sept. 13.
Anaya was originally scheduled to begin his visit on Oct. 12 to 20.
