HAMILTON--A group of protestors occupying an Enbridge pipeline pumping station near Hamilton have been served with a court injunction ordering them to leave the site.
The group has been given two hours to vacate the premises, said Melissa Elliott, a Tuscarora woman from Six Nations who is acting as spokesperson for the protest.
Elliott said the protestors, who have locked themselves to the gates of the station, are currently discussing their next move.
“Those talks are happening right now,” said Elliott.
The five-day long protest has stalled worked by Enbridge in their Westover terminal for phase one of their Line 9 project which aims to bring tar sands oil to the east.
Protests in support of the Hamilton area action are also planned across the country Tuesday as part of the “Sovereignty Summer” campaign spearheaded by an alliance between Idle No More and the Defenders of the Land.
Protests are planned in places like Vancouver, Edmonton, Sarnia and Toronto, along with other locations.
Thanks to you all for your diligence! Wish I could be there with you … as an Intervenor, I fully support what you are doing in this blockade … the public has to be made aware of the dangers and issues surrounding this environmentally dangerous pipeline changeover. These pipelines are almost 40 years old, the same age as the Kalamazoo pipeline blow-out in 2010, and the pipeline in Arkansas pipeline blow-out this past Easter weekend. Both of those were also changed over to carry Tar Sands diluted Bitumen – Dil Bit – which is highly toxic and corrosive, and should NOT be put into these old pipelines that were not meant for this kind of ‘oil’.
