Nunavut was born 25 years ago today when it separated from the Northwest Territories to become its own territory to protect Inuit culture and language.
It’s an accomplishment that was celebrated by Gov. Gen. Mary Simon, who is Inuk from Nunavik and visited Iqaluit for the occasion.
Premier P.J. Akeeagok also wished Nunavut a happy birthday.
“We are hitting a major milestone of 25 years today. You can see the huge advancements we’ve been able to make,” he said
“…And I very much feel a sense of optimism today knowing it’s really about the future and the incredible youth that we have. Who continue to push for the original vision that Nunavut was to become.”
