OTTAWA–The Manitoba Metis Federation is claiming victory following a Supreme Court of Canada decision on a three-decade old case.
The Supreme Court, in a 6-2 ruling, found that the “federal Crown failed to implement the land grant provision” under the Manitoba Act of 1870.
The Manitoba Metis Federation argued that the federal government failed to set aside 1.4 million acres of land for the children of the Metis.
The ruling is expected to trigger land claim negotiations.
I wouldn’t call it a “victory”.
They’re Indians now and were better off as a “distinct society”.
This is a great day for our Nation! This will change the political landscape in this country and will pave the way for Metis people to claim our rightful place in it.
Thank you David and the MMF for your dogged determination.
