Actor and musician Gary Farmer received a top honour from the Imaginative Film and Media Arts Festival on the weekend.
The August Schellenberg Award of Excellence recognizes the impact, professionalism and community work of Canadian and international Indigenous artists.
Farmer paid tribute to Schellenberg for paving the way for entertainers like himself.
“Augie Schellenberg he was an actor and (I) admired his work here in Canada for – and the U.S. of course – for a long time,” Farmer said in his acceptance speech Saturday.
“It’s an honor to be here among all the Native people here today.”
Farmer’s first acting role was in 1975. He’s still working in film with credits on Dead Man, Resident Alien and Reservation Dogs.
The ceremony wrapped up in Toronto with a song from Farmer alongside Derek Miller.
