The Native Women’s Association of Canada is taking heat for backing the Conservative’s recent announcement on a strategy to deal with murdered and missing Aboriginal women’s cases.
Pam Palmater, chair of Indigenous governance at Ryerson University’s centre for Indigenous governance, says the association should not have backed the Conservative’s $10 million announcement.
Palmater said the strategy criminalizes First Nations communities.
Bravo for NWAC for bringing national attention to the issue. The guest has some salient points. However, I don’t get how it further criminalizes “our” Aboriginal men. If Aboriginal men are part of the systemic sexualization and victimization of missing and murdered Aboriginal women, then we need to be honest about that. Also, what the heck is a ‘stragedy’? Just made the interview less valid and amatuerish. I suppose it is another example of how Aboriginal women and their viewpoints are not taken seriously.
