The RCMP say officers responding to a man with firearms was shot and killed on Gordon First Nation on July 6.
According to a release from Punnichy RCMP, police were called to the community located 110 km northeast of Regina at 2:15 p.m.
“Punnichy RCMP responded to a report of a man armed with a rifle and making threats at Gordon First Nation,” the release said. “In the course of events, the responding police officers discharged a firearm and injured the man.”
The release says officers performed “life-saving measures” until emergency services arrived.
According to the RCMP, he died shortly later.
“The firearms of the man as well as of the responding police officers have been seized,” the police said.
Police have request an “external police investigation” from the Weyburn Police Service.
According to the release, the RCMP “has requested the Saskatchewan Ministry of Justice and Attorney General appoint an independent investigation observer.” A second independent observer of “First Nation ancestry” has also been requested.
Police say support services are “currently being organized for the family of the deceased and police officers.”
